Kelly Vowell Spends Summer As Prestigious SMU Maguire And Irby Public Service Summer Intern

Kelly Vowell, a resident of Billings and a graduate student majoring in piano performance and pedagogy at Southern Methodist University, was named as a Maguire and Irby Family Public Service Intern. Students participating in the 14-year-old program earned positions that provide summer stipends for public service volunteer work and research. Interns work as far away as Angola and Nicaragua, and as close as Austin and Dallas. The program, sponsored by the Cary M. Maguire Center for Public Ethics and the Irby Family Foundation, has supported volunteers in 13 states, and 11 countries outside the USA and in more than 100 agencies in Texas.

Vowell is going to create and establish a self-sustaining summer music enrichment program at West Dallas Community School. in Dallas, Texas.

The Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility is a university-wide center that supports student and faculty ethics-related education and activities, as well as community outreach to private and public institutions in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The center was funded by an endowment of $2.5 million from its namesake in 1995.

SMU is a nationally ranked private university in Dallas founded 100 years ago. Today, SMU enrolls nearly 11,000 students who benefit from the academic opportunities and international reach of seven degree-granting schools.
